MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
ENGLAND AND WALES BIG GAINS BY LABOUR (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, November 1. Municipal elections are being held in over 300 cities and boroughs in England and Wales to replace one-third of the councils. The first results showed:— Gains Losses Labour 172 6 Conservatives 0 100 Liberals 5 31 Independents .... 10 51 Labour thus far has only secured control of Barnsley, Wallsend, Swansea and Oldham. It has a considerable gain of seats in Burnley, Derby, Bolton, Sunderland, Salford and Bootle. Those defeated at Manchester include Lady Simon and Lord Stanley of Alderley (Liberals). FURTHER RETURNS. LONDON, November 2. (Received Nov. 2, at 8.80 p.m.) The latest' returns show the following gains and losses: —
The remainder of the results will be declared to-day. At Oldham Labour gained five seats from the Conservatives and two from Ihe Liberals. Herbert Smith, the miners’ leader, was defeated at Barnsley. Labour regained control of Sheffield, which it lost last year. PRESS COMMENT ON RESULTS. LONDON, November 2. (Received Nov. 3, at 1 a.m.) The Guardian says: “ The swing jo Labour at the Municipal elections is stronger than was anticipated, and was especially marked in Yorkshire and the north-east. The results confirm tile view that the East Fulham by-election result was no flash in the pan.” The Herald declares that the electors struck a blow for better housing and social services.
