CUSTOMS DEFRAUDED

GERMAN HEAVILY FINED BRITISH HOSPITALITY ABUSED. LONDON, November 1. Duno Dickhofer, aged 36, a German, was fined £3OBI for defrauding the Customs of £1275 by importing German mechanical lighters without paying duty. The prosecution characterised the offence as an abuse of British hospitality. The lighters were received in Dublin and smuggled to Ulster hidden in the sears of motor cars, thence to London. Dickhofe'r also defrauded the Free State Customs. The magistrate recommended Dickhofer’s deportation. The defence pleaded that he was not desirous of returning to Germany for political reasons.
