(Peb United Press Association.) AUCKLAND. November 2,

Beautiful .weather, prevailed for -the final gallops at Ellerslie this morning. The course proper, with the poles about 30ft out, was open for the fast work, and the ; goihg was.excellent.. - : , ' Spiral and. Hawthorn opened the proceedings, being sent over, the first three furlongs in 39 4-ssec, and the -full distance in Imin 20sec. Hawthorn eased in the straight,, and Spiral was a number of lengths in front at the finish. The Mitchelson Cup candidates, Carfex and _Red Sun, with Senegal, jumped away at the mile post. The last-named was in front pver half the journey, 'where Carfex and Red Sun moved up,, Carfex eventually finishing oyer a length ahead of Red Suni with Senegal several lengths away. The first four furlongs were fun in 51 l-ssec, and the full distance in Imin 45 3-ssec.'’ It was. a good gallop, with Carfex going particularly well at the finish, though Red Sun, who' was op the outside, also did his work impressively. ~ Whenuakura, after running his first two furlongs in 24 3-ssec, reeled off the half-mile in 50 3-Sscc. He went from the mile to the half-mile post, and did his work attractively. Pomp jumped away at the five-furlong post, running the' first two furlongs in 25sec, and completing his

Baroscope worked over a round, but did not have much pace on till the last five furlongs,, which he covered in Imin 5 2-ssec. Tbe Pimlico Handicap, of six furlongs, resulted: — WINOOKA 1 GOLDSTEP 2 TAMBOUR .. .. .. .. 3 Winopka ran a good race. Hope To Do was scratched at the last minute. Winooka broke with the field, but Britt did not rush him. In the early part of the race the horse was permitted to settle into his best stride. Britt asked for a little more from his horse just after passing the half-mile pole, and Winooka began picking up on the leaders. He was forced to circle several horses on the turn, and came very wide into the stretch. This cost him a lot of ground. When he was straightened into the stretch Winooka responded willingly to -the hard urging. He wore the leaders down, and was up to win by a head. Britt was driving him hard near the end to fight off Goldstep and: Tambour. A head separated the last two.

Winooka’s victory netted his owners 2500 dollars. The time, Imin II l-ssec, was 2-ssec slower than the track record. It was a popular victory. The crowd was brought to its feet by the close finish.
