E.- Ellis’s appeal against, his Dunedin disqualification will be heard by Racing Conference judges at Christchurch to-day. The YA radio stations will attempt to rebroadcast a description of the race for the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, at approximately 6.30 New Zealand time. It. has been pointed out that nearly all Hall Mark’s best races have been run at Randwick on a right-handed course, and that he has not done so well in Victoria when racing left-handed. This theory will be tested in the Derby to-morrow. Place backers will not receive much return from Whenuakura after the Welcome Stakes at Auckland on Saturday. The light-weight L. J. Wolford has been granted an apprentice jockey’s license, and has taken service with F. Trilford. Coronilla will be ridden by A. Eastwood in the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton oh Saturday. The crack light-weight will be on Rocket in the Cup and on Silver Streak 6 in the Stewards. A Christchurch Press Association message states that Don Jose was scratched for the Spring Hurdles at 11.50 a.m. yesterday. • The Wingatui trainer S. 6. Ware is due at Riccarton to-day with Worship and Gallant Fox.

The late Dr W. E. Herbert, who died ' in Wellington this week, took a keen intercut in racing, and was a' keen student of the thoroughbred. He was a member of the Wellington Racing Club for many years, and owned a number of horses. Among those in which he was interested were Philomela (now a wellknown brood mare), Bo Peep, Cotillion, Mary Margaret, Struggle, Active, Pot Pourri, and Vogue. ‘ L. G. Morris will ride Red Manfred in the Derby at Riccarton on Monday, while T. Green will have the mount bn Epigram in the same race. Croupier looks in good order, and if he repeat* his first day’s form at Trentham, where he was narrowly defeated by Golden Wings, he will have to be reckoned with in the Stewards’ Handicap on Saturday. His recent track gallops have left no doubt as to his great speed. A. E, Wormald has added a new horse to his team. He is a two-year-old chestnut gelding by Hoylake from Arrowshield, by Arrowsmith from Red Shield, by All Red from Rose Shield, a sister to Royal Artillery, by Hotchkiss from Rosa of Wellington. The youngster, who looks a good sort, is. owned by Mr Ns Rutherford, who bred him. By the time he goes to the post for the Melbourne Cup, that old warrior Shadow King will have covered 1 more than 100 miles in races. The distances he has covered each season are as follows:—Two years old, 8m- Sf; three years, 11m Af; four years, 13m 4£; five years, 15m If; six years, 24m 2f; seven years, 20m If; eight. years, 5m sf. Total 98m 6f. No other Cup candidate has such a list of performasces, and in addition to that record, Shadow King holds that of haying started most timesr-this year will be his fifth —and of having gained the most places—a second and two thirds. The two-year-old filly Variant,- by Limond from Motley, showed great promise early in the season, but a cold made it necessary to miss the Dunedin meeting, where it was thought she would run well in; the MTiean Stakes. She had her first race at Motukarara, where she gave a ■ creditable showing, and the experience should help her to do even better at Riccarton, though she will be at a disadvantage in the Welcome Stakes, as she is not yet at her best after her spell. Trivento, a final acceptor for the Melbourne Cup, is a member of the veteran J.. Scobie’s team, and special interest attaches to him as he is a maiden. He must, however, have shown his, trainer something to warrant his engagement being gone on with. He has breeding in his favour as a stayer, as he is by the dual Derby and Melbourne Cup winner from Tola, who is by Prince Foote, also a winner of the Derby and Melbourne Cup.
