ON THE WAY TO GRETNA
YOUNG COUPLE ARRESTED. That, the couple were on their way to Gretna Green to be married when they were arrested at Durham was the statement made at Harrogate by a solicitor when William Cunningham, aped 24. labourer, of no fixed residence, and Annie Cunningham Thompson, aged 21, were remanded in custody for a week charged with a breach ! of recognisances. A police inspector stated that on June 24 the couple were charged with unlawfully wounding Howard Hall, an accountant. Released on bail a month later, after making various appearances before the court, they should have reported themselves to the police daily. Instead of doing so they went to Cleethorpes, where, on August 10, they were sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment for being drunk and disorderly. When released from prison, on August 23, the accused were given a railway warrant to enable them to appear at Harrogate the following day. They did not appear, however, but were traced to Durham and arrested. Defending counsel said that at the time of their arrest the couple were on their way to Gretna Green to be married.
Four big Atlantic steamships are to he lengthened each by 40ft. In spite of the increase in size of the ships the alteration in the shapes of their bows will make them travel two knots faster with the same engine power. This ip a striking illustration of effect of streamlining. The work will cost so much* that it will only bo saved after four years running of the ships, and this only if the present price of fuel is maintained.
