IRISH CRUSOE ON BIRDS’ ISLE
LIFE IN A SMUGGLERS’ CAVE. A young Irish graduate has found an unusual (Summer residence at Strangford Lough 'on one of the many email islands dotted about the mouth of the lough. The island, which is less that an acre in tent, is the haunt of wild sea birds and of hundreds of swans which fly there from the lakes on various estates round the coast. 1 Mr Rielly, the graduate, who is a native of Queen’s Cpunty and. a bachelor of science, spends his summer vacation on this little, island studying the life and habits of the. birds which come ahd_,go each day: . , , . - • • . The cave-house dwelling in which .lie lives was used as a' den and store by smugglers nearly a hundred years ~ago. Many of the names may still, be seen oh the rock entrance .'to the caves. Seals call at the island one day every iveek—just an dine-and-sleep visit—while other strange visitors include two grey geese from Norway, a flamingo, and a flock of cranes. ’ j,".
