A young married man, Eric Reginald Smith, employed by a millinery company, was killed this morning when he fell .40 feet from the top floor of the Strand Arcade, He was seen by the liftman on the top floor, and soon afterwards was seen falling. KILLED BY LIGHTNING (Per United Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, November 2. A. Maori named Wanau was struck dead by lightning in a paddock at Omata this evening. He was a married rhan with several children. Wanau was walking across the paddock with his son, who, though only about eight feet away from his father when the flash came, was unharmed. Wanau’s death was immediate. A brief thunderstorm followed a sunny and exceedingly hot day. Rain clouds quickly gathered and heavy rain fell, accompanied by lightning, and within an hour the evening was again perfect. RELIEF WORKER FOUND DEAD (Per United Press association, i GREYMOUTH, November 2. Ernest Cecil Hill, aged 31, a married man with no children, was found dead in a bedroom at his residence at Dobson at 3.30 to-day by his wife, who had been absent for an hour. There was a bullet wound in the head. The deceased was a relief work, and had been in ill-health. MAN FOUND DEAD (Per United Press association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 2. A verdict of suicide while in a depressed state of mind was returned by the coroner, Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., at the inquest into the death of John Henry Christopher Thacker, married, aged 43, residing at 127 St. Andrews square, Christchurch. It was stated that Thacker had been in ill-health for some time. He was found this morning in the washhouse at his home. Alongside was a copper with the gas turned on. Two doctors tried artificial respiration without success. v
