ST. JOSEPH’S BAND

AN ENJOYABLE CONCERT With the object of raising funds to enable it to compete at the forthcoming contest - at Invercargill, the St. Joseph’s Orphanage Band, with several supporting artists,' presented a concert in the Concert Chamber, Town Hall, last night. The band, which won the C Grade Championship at Dunedin in February last, intends to compete in the C Grade test selection and the combined B and G Grade quickstep at Invercargill. In the course of his introductory remarks, the chairman of the Band Committee (Mr J. Hade) stated that through the generosity of a few friends, who had found the whole cost, the band was now equipped with new uniforms. It was hoped that others would, by a similar display of generosity, find a sufficient amount to enable the band to pay what was owing on the instruments. The band’s contributions—to the programme included “ God Defend New Zealand ” as' an opening number, “ Parade of the Tin Soldiers,” the marches “ Invercargill ” and “When the Boys Come Home,” and selections from “ The Pirates of Penzance,” The ability of members of the band as soloists was proved by the performances of Master P. Glenn, who contributed a tenor horn solo, “ Concertante ” (Theo Hoch), and Master H. Maloney, who played “ Silver Threads Among the Gold ” as a euphonium solo, The band had the assistance of the St. Philomena’s College Choir, which sang “Come Out to the Meadows” (Arne) and “The Snowy-breasted Pearl” (Moore). Vocalists, who contributed enjoyable items were Miss B. Gallien, who sang “A Heart That’s Free ” (Robyn), Miss Mollie Fenton, who rendered “ Ring, Bells, Ring ” (Maud C. Day), Mr D. Fogarty and Mr Rex King. , Mr Fogarty’s number was “Bird Songs at Eventide” (Coates), and Mr King was accompanied by the band in “The Yeoman’s Wedding Song” (Poniatowski) and "Good-bye” from “ The White Horse Inn.” Variety was lent to the programme by Miss Molly Baker’s elocutionary item, “ Polling Day.” Miss Kathleen Whelan was the accompanist.
