THE SINGAPORE BASE

NEARING COMPLETION HEAVY DAILY (X)ST. SINGAPORE, October 31. At a cost of approximately £IO,OOO a day the Singapore base is nearing completion. It occupies five miles of the waterfront, going inland in its deepest part three miles. The panoramic beauty of the Johore Straits is seared where the tropical sunlight catches the mass of concrete. The completion of this gigantic task, which to date has involved the dredging of 5,000,000 cubic yards of sand and has utilised 1,000,000 yards of concrete and 250,000 yards of granite, will mean that British interests in the Far East are well-nigh unassailable. Although faced with serious outbreaks of malaria, losing hundreds of coolies, and using mainly unskilled Asiatic labour, the engineers are well ahead of schedule.
