SWIMMING
The Otago Swimming Centre’s “ Learn to Swim ” gala, to be held at the Municipal Baths on Saturday night, has drawn a record entry, and the 33 1-3 Yards Second-class Handicap has attracted no fewer than 45 swimmers, among whom is the eight-year-old Invercargill swimmer. Miss A. Fitzsimmons, -who at the age of seven gained a certificate for 880 yards. The 33 1-3 Yards Three Second Short Limit Handicap has attracted a select field of a dozen of the fastest sprinters in the province, including W. J. Jarvis, Reg. Geddes, R. ,H. Nuttall, G. Field, S. W. Jarvis, A. Thomas. E. Toase, J. O’Driscoll, and several others. The 100 Yards events should be equally good, the competitors including W. J. Jarvis (New, Zealand intermediate champion), Syd. Jarvis (the New Zealand junior recordbreaker), Reg. Geddes (ex-Otago intermediate champion), and other well-known local performers. The competitors in the Short Dash will include J. Blakeley, the well-known Wellington champion swimmer. The Business Firms’ Mixed Relay hag drawn entries from Ross and Glendining’s, D.S.A., A. and T. Inglis,. and Turnbull and Jones, and the Interclub Six-a-side Relay has drawn three teams from the Kiwi Club, three from Zenith, and three from Dunedin, with one from St. Clair. An attraction will be the water polo match between the Otago team and the rest. An original burlesque is being arranged by Messrs J. Benfield, C. J. Leeden, and O. Holland. In view of the valuable work being done by the centre and clubs in connection with the "Learn to Swim” campaign now in progress, a large house, is anticipated.
