COUNTRY CHILDREN’S HOLIDAYS
TO THE EDITOB. , ( Sir,— Now the schools will soon be breaking up for their annual holidays of six weeks, and every child would like to go away for a change. The children in the towns have every advantage of amusement and arrangements made for the poor children to go into the country. The children’s health camp at Waikouaiti was a great success. Now. what about our poor children in the country, who never get away from home? Many children in the country have never been to Sunday school, never been to a picture show, or even seen the sea. What a treat it would be for the poor children in the country to spend their holidays at the seaside—such a place
as Waikouaiti or Warrington! I do think that arrangements could-be made for children in the country, whose parents are not in a position to send their children away for a holiday, now that we have branches of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union in every district in Otago. I would suggest that the secretary of each branch make inquiries and find out how many children would take the opportunity of such a holiday, and enlist some members who could afford to go and look after the children, and then parents would know that they would be well looked after. Also, we have got the Girl Guides, and each branch might collect as much money as possible to pay expenses. Farmers and their wives could provide mutton, poultry (cooked), butfer, eggs, and vegetables. It would greatly help to bring country and town together. Hoping that some abler persons may take the matter up. —I am, etc., Mother of Six.
