UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
LOCAL ACTIVITIES GROUPS FOR WORK. The following groups of the City Council Works Department will commence at 8 a.m. to-day:— 70—Malvern street, at old sawmill. 72 — Somerville street, at Abbotsford road. 73 — Preston crescent, at Harcourt street. 74 — Ross Creek reservoir. 76 —Malvern street, at old sawmill. 79 —Norfolk street, at Hobson street. 81— Fraser’s road, at sanitary stables. 82— Pine Hill road, at Gladstone road. 85—Burwood avenue, off Highgate, Maori Hill. 87 — M'Gill’s Farm, top of Montague street. 88 — Fraser’s road, at baths. 90 —Elgin road, at Barr street. 2000— Heriot row, top of Constitution street. 2001— Heriot row, top of Constiution street. 2002 — Heriot row, top of Constitution street. 2003 — Heriot row, top of Constitution street. RESERVES’ DEPARTMENT. Groups will report for work at 8 a.m. to-day as under:— 706, 608, at Opoho Football Ground. 93, 705, at the Stadium. 84, at Mornington Football Ground. 86, at Chisholm Park. LABOUR BUREAU. Group 222, under the Government Labour Bureau, must report at the Labour Bureau, 11 King street tomorrow. Any man who fails to report will bo struck off the group, and will not receive further relief unless and until it is again granted to him by the Labour Bureau. CHRISTMAS CHEER PICNIC A meeting of the combined committees of the Mayor’s Relief Depot and the St. Kilda Unemployment Association was held last night to arrange a Christmas cheer picnic for the children of registered unemployed living in St. Kilda. The deputy mayor (Mr A. D. Edgar) presided. It was decided to canvass the borough for assistance in the way of money and foodstuffs, commencing next Monday. Every official collector will wear a badge and have a collection box and a book. The foodstuffs will be collected on the morning of the picnic (December 16) before noon.
Messrs R. P. Williams and H. Napiet were appointed joint secretaries, and Mr D, C. Cameron treasurer.
An executive committee, consisting of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, Mr F. Hodgson, the Revs. Paris, Taylor, and Wingfield, and Mesdames Williams, Callisper, and Hodgson, together with the secretaries and treasurer, was appointed. It was decided to ask the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society for the use of Tahuna Park for the location of the picnic. The Forbury School Band will be asked to lead the procession and play selections on the ground.
