RUSH ON A BANK
EXCITEMENT IN DUBLIN" CHEQUES FOR 1916 WAGES. DUBLIN, October 14. There was excitement in the Bank of Ireland when 52 employees of the Dublin Corporation, who were interned after the rebellion at Easter, 1916, arrived in a body to cash cheques for wages withheld during their imprisonment. The cheques ranged from £llO to £5. An armed sentry became suspicious, turned out the guard, and held up the men. Subsequently they were admitted, but the cashiers refused to pay the cheques as they were crossed, necessitating the summoning of a corporation official to overcome the difficulty. The cost of compensation falls on the ratepayers.
