THE QUEEN CARNIVAL
TO THE EDITC ;. Sir,—lt is quite obvious on reading the letter in this morning’s issue by “ Port Chalmers” that your correspondent is more concerned with the possibility of gain attached to the buying of a ticket in the Carnival raffles than with the good resulting from such a donation. Being opposed to the principle of the lottery, whatever the purpose, I bought no tickets, but instead made a straight-out donation. Perhaps if “ Port Chalmers ” had acted similarly he would not now be so “ disgusted,” nor bemoan to such a degree the loss of his “ smiling ” pound note. An example like this brings out forcibly the evil attached to art unions, etc. I would remind “Port Chalmers” that “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” — I am, etc., Anti-Gamble. Dunedin, October 31.
