JUDGES ARRESTED
BY SOVIET’S ORDERS DIRECTIONS IGNORED (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, October 30. (Received Oct. 31, at 0.15 a.m.) The Riga correspondent of The Time* states that the Soviet has ordered the arrest and trial of eight judges in the Urals for an offence unique in Russian annals. The judges, regardless of whether accused were guilty or innocent, allegedly lengthily sentenced engineers and specialists, thereby ignoring the Government’s directions. Apparently the judges were unable to keep pace with the zigzag policy of justice and applied earlier instructions instead of altering the indictments to permit of milder sentences, as required from Moscow. Many improper sentences have now been quashed. Thirty judges and court officials at Minsk are undergoing trial for passing over-mild sentences in consideration of bribes, for which the penalty is death.— Times Cable.
