THE PALESTINE RIOTS

VEILED WOMEN INCITE MOB BATON CHARGES BY POLICE (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) JERUSALEM, October 29. Baton charges dispersed a fresh attempt to penetrate the police cordon. The rioters’ home-made bombs exploded harmlessly. Stones were thrown and sticks used, compelling a British noncommissioned' officer to fire a few shots. Two rioters were killed and 15 taken to hospital. Veiled women, screaming from the housetops, incited the mob. The whole city was filled with excited Arabs eager to demonstrate that they could compel Jewish shops to close in the main street. They smashed one Jewish establishment and compelled one British shop to put up its shutters. Members of the Arab Executive were arrested. Others protested against the police firing during the disturbances at Jaffa, and demanded the release of the leaders. It was decided to protest to the Arab King and the League of Nations. Arab shopkeepers and motor bus owners continue to strike. A flight of aeroplanes is parked in Cairo in readiness for any emergency, but so far it has not been required. The police fully control the situation. Curfew is effective at nightfall. The Jaffa trouble has been apparently quelled. , All the Arab papers have been suspended in Damascus. JEWS TERRIFIED. THE RIOTING SPREADING. LONDON, October 29. The Weekly Dispatch’s special correspondent at Jerusalem says: “ Aeroplanes are circling overhead as I telephone. Armed ears patrol the streets, and Arab leaders are pouring into Haifa. The military authorities are prepared for the gravest eventualities. The situation is tense in several towns, and the rioting is spreading. The Jews are becoming terrified, and are remaining in their houses.”
