LESS “BARRACKING”
SCHOOL GIVES A LEAD BANNING OF WAR-CRIES. Air Jardine would have been pleased had he been present at the gathering at the Sydney Cricket Ground recently, for the training of spectators in p d'le comments on athletic sports has begun, and at the right end. The ultimate downfall of barracking vsays a correspondent) may follow the action of the school authorities in banning a-.lu tu war-cries. These shrilly deafening yells which were wont to split eardrums at ah school sports are now forbidden, to everybody’s great relief. There was ranch happiness on the faces of the majority of those present at tfte result of the day’s sport. The historic Sydney Grammar School has come out on top. The formerly invincible “ Grammar ” had been challenged and overthrown on several occasions, but now it has redeemed its former supremacy on the great public schools’ sports day, and the supporters of the black and yellow colours are content. “ Grammar ” has always boasted a team of hefty athletes. Year after year another brood comes forth, looking about 10 years o'der than its average age. The school is perhaps the most democratic great public school in New South Wales. The King’s School, set in sylvan peace in Parramatta Park, the comparative newcomer, Cranbrook, and Scots, Newington, and Riverview —each has its heroes in games and scholarship. But no grudging note was heard in the congratulations received by “ Grammar ” after it had won the senior championship.
