“LEARN TO SWIM” CAMPAIGN

OTAGO CENTRE’S EFFORT Judging by the enthusiasm displayed last evening at the opening of the Otago Swimming Centre’s “ Learn to Swim ” campaign, the centre’s decision to extend the period this year from a week to a fortnight will be well justified. During the evening the pool at the Municipal Baths presented a scene of more than usual activity, and the instructors had a busy time initiating learners into the rudiments of swimming and coaching improvers. , During the coming fortnight competent instructors from the various clubs will give free coaching to all learners who wish to take advantage of their tuition, all work a£ the Municipal Baths being under the direction of the custodian (Mr P. A. Mathieson). The T.M.C.A. has put its baths at the disposal of the centre during the period of the campaign, .and in this pool instructors from the'Zenith Club, under the direction of the club coach (Mr W. H. Buckland) will give their services free of cost to those desirous of learning to swim, or of becoming more proficient. Three sessions daily will be held, that in the afternoon being specially set aside for ladies. f :

The daily" programme for the fortnight with the exception of next Saturday evening, when a “Leam to Swim” carnival is being held, at which_ H.M.S. Diomede sailors will take part, is as fol-lows-Morning, tuition by baths staff and instructors; 12 to 2 p.m. tuition by instructors appointed from clubs and centre; afternoon (special sessions for ladies), tuition by baths staff and centre instructors; 7 to 9.15 p.m., tuition by club and centre instructors. The usual club hours from 8.45 p.m. onwards are being held during “Learn to Swim ” fortnight, but on several nights demonstrations have been arranged during these periods. Each Monday night the St. Clair Life Saving Club will arrange demonstrations at its dub hour; on Tuesday nights the Kiwi Club hours, Mr P. A. Mathieson and Reg GeddCs, assisted by other well-known swimmers, will give a display of fancy swimming*and of the .various strokes; and on each Wednesday night at its club hour the Dunedin Amateur Swimming Club will arrange diving displays by champion performers. On Thursday night of each week at its club hour the Kiwi Club will run off several of its club handicap events.
