PORT CHALMERS NEWS

PERSONAL The Rev. J. G. S. Dunn, of Port Chalmers, who conducted the services in the Oamaru Presbyterian Church on Sunday, will return to-day. \ SALVATION ARMY JUBILEE The jubilee celebrations of the Port Chalmers Salvation Army Corps will be held from November 9 to November 13. Colonel Fred. Burton (field secretary for New Zealand) will conduct the proceedings. Colonel Burton was stationed at Port Chalpiers as a lieutenant in 1894. Three bands will take part in the various functions, including the Port Chalmers Municipal Band. The Mayor (Mr J. Watson) will preside at some of the gatherings. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH The eighty-first anniversary services of the Port Chalmers Presbyterian Church were held on Sunday, large congregations being present at both services. The Rev. W. Maclean, of the Oamaru Presbyterian Church, gave very inspiring addresses. Speaking from I Kings vi, 7, Mr Maclean said the silent building of the temple was expressive of the King’s reverence for God, Whose local habitation the temple was to be; but it was typical also of God’s own works in nature and symbolical of the silent growth of the Church of the Spirit, which _ material structures made visible. The silent construction of the temple was possible, because every stone had been prepared beforehand at the quarries for its fitting place; and, so, the living stones of life and character were prepared in the quarries of worship and witness and work Tor their place in that spiritual house for God’s habitation which they called the Church. The text of the evening sermon was taken from Titus. Mr Maclean said that on anniversary day there was a temptation to glorify the past and to dream of futnte glory, forgetting the greatness of the present. The present alone was theirs in which to dare and achieve and, j therefore, was big with destiny. But the greatness of the present was fully realised only as it was lived as in the light of the eternal world and every task was performed as in the great Taskmaster’s eyes. Then, fleeting days and commonplace tasks came to have eternal meaning and eternal value. At the morning service Miss M. Howden sang the solo, “ But the Lord Is Mindful,” and the choir, under the leadership of Mr G. F. Mirarns, rendered the anthem, “ Every Day Will I Bless Thee.” At the evening service Miss T. M. Parry and Miss M. Pollard sang “When i Survey the Wondrous Cross,” and the choir rendered the anthem, “King of Kings.” Mr Maclean addressed the Presbyterian Bible classes on Sunday afternoon, -j I NEW WORKSHOP It was reported yesterday that a large workshop will be erected at Port Chalmers for machining the steel to be used in the construction of the new Post Office at Dunedin.
