ETTRICK DEBATING SOCIETY
WINTER PROGRAMME CONCLUDED The Ettrick Debating Society brougtit to a close a successful season, when, on Friday night last, the society’s annual social and dance was held in the Ettrick Hall. Over 120 were present, and enjoyed a programme representative of the society’s various activities. The president (Mr J. Hainsworth) expressed pleasure at the large attendance, and welcomed the visitors from Dunedin. Mr N. S. Woods suitably replied. The nrogramme included items by the Music Circle and a one-act play presented by the Play Circle of the society. A feature of special interest was the presence of visiting members from the St. Andrew’s Debating Society (Dunedin), seven of whom staged a one-act play which was greatly appreciated. Those taking part were Misses Carter, Desmoulin. Gilliland, Hayward, Lennox, Moore and Mr N. S. Woods. The vast item before supper was a short debate between Misses Gilliland and Moore (St. Andrew's) and Messrs C. P. Hainsworth and Brown (Ettrick). The subject of the'debate was “ That Man is Vainer than Woman,” Ettrick taking the affirmative. This was. developed on somewhat humorous lines. After supper a dance was held, the music being provided by Miss Desmoulin. Miss M. Raper and Mr R. Rapcr, and the duties of M.C. being carried out by Mr J. Fleetwood-Tamblyn.
On the day following the society’s annual picnic was held, the Ettrick branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union co-operating to make the outing a success. Over 70 people made the trip, the rendezvous being the picturesque old Teviot homestead. A programme of sports and games, including a cricket match, had been arranged, and these were entered into whole-heartedly. *
