CHORAL SOCIETY

The Choral Society’s concert in the Town Hall to-night will offer the first opportunity for 25 years of hearing “Israel in Egypt,”’ Handel’s greatest oratorio. The double choruses will be rendered by a large and well-balanced choir specially augmented for the occasion, and supported by a full orchestra. The final rehearsals have revealed that the chorus work will be perhaps the most impressive the society has ever done, and the choir will be supported by a very competent group of soloists. Miss Mary Pratt’s lovely voice will be heard in two solos—“ Their Land Brought Forth Frogs,” and the exquisite “ Thou Shalt Bring Them In,” and also in a duet with Mr Mitchell (tenor), whose chief solo is the martial air “ The Enemy Said.” Mr Denis Dowling, who is rapidly coming to the front rank amongst our local baritones, has two excellent solos, “He Layeth the Beams,” and “Wrfve From Wave.” Miss Doris Haworth will sing the passages introducing the final chorus, “ Sing Ye to the Lord.” The concert will open with Beethoven’s Choral Fantasia for solo piano, chorus and orchestra, Mrs H. C. Campbell taking the important solo part. The choir will also sing “ Cast Thy Burden Upon the Lord” as a memorial tribute to Mr G. M. Thomson, the late president.
