NEW ZEALANDER ARRESTED. ALLEGED THEFTS IN DOMINION. SYDNEY, October 13. (Received Oct. 13, at 7 p.m.) Horace John Algar, aged 42, a company manager, was charged at the Central Court with stealing £143 3s 6d from Raymond Swanger and others at Wellington. Algar was arrested on board the Wanganella. The court made an order that defendant be handed over in custody for return to New Zealand. TWO TRAINS COLLIDE. BOTH SEVERELY DAMAGED. BRISBANE, October 13. (Received Oct. 13, at 10.30 p.m.) A mail train to Townsville collided with a stationary goods train 56 miles north of Brisbane and caused severe damage to both trains, but the passengers in the mail train escaped with minor injuries and shock. SERVICE CAR OVERTURNS. EIGHT WOMEN INJURED. MELBOURNE, October 13. (Received Oct. 13, at 11 p.m.) A service car containing 13 women passengers, mostly for Canberra, struck a concrete culvert near Wallan, and overturned and caught fire. All the passengers were extricated before the flames reached them. Eight women were injured, the majority with broken bones. The remainder were all severely shaken, while the driver suffered facial injuries. The accident was due to the bursting of a tyre, causing the vehicle to swerve and strike the culvert with terrific force. SLAUGHTERMEN’S STRIKE. PROSPECT OF SETTLEMENT. MELBOURNE, October 13. (Received Oct. 13, at 11.15 p.m.) The slaughtermen’s strike at the export meatworks is believed to be approaching a settlement. The Trades Hall Disputes Committee, on behalf 6f the stalkers* made overtures to the emplovers’ representatives for a conference, and this is now under consideration.
