VISIT OF WARSHIP

NEW ZEALAND SQUADRON FLAGSHIP H.M.S. DUNEDIN IN PORT Making a welcome return viiit after an absence of about 12 months, H.M.S. Dunedin, flagship of the New Zealand Naval Division, arrived here at 11.30 a.m. yesterday from Bluff.' With the cruiser’s band playing on the quarterdeck, the ship berthed at the Rattray street wharf, and a warm welcome was accorded the crew by a large crowd. The Dunedin will remain here until October 19, on which date she will sail for Timaru. She will later visit Akaroa, Lyttelton and Wellington, and is scheduled to return to the naval base at Auckland on November 18.

Since she parted company with the Australian cruisers Canberra and Australia in Cook Strait on September 27, after engaging in manoeuvres, the Dunedin has visited Picton, the West Coast Sounds, Stewart Island, and Bluff. The ship spent a -week cruising in the Sounds, and the officers and men were greatly impressed with the majestic grandeur of Milford Sound. 1 After the cruiser had berthed the Mayor (the Kev. E. T. Cox), the acting [town clerk (Mr R. A. Johnston), the ‘ Civic' Committee, the chairman of the Harbour Board (Mr H. C. Campbell), I the secretary of the board (Mr W. Reni ton), the hax-bour master (Captain J. i Mac Lean), and Major Mead (represent- . ing the military forces), went on board and extended a welcome to Rear-admiral F. Burges Watson, D. 5.0., his’ officers and men. The Rear-admiral thanked his visitors, and said he felt sure‘the whole of the ship’s company would enjoy the visit. Rear-admiral Burges Watson called on the Mayor and chairman of the Harbour Board during the afternoon. Various entertainments are being arranged for the officers and men. A miniature rifle team from the ship wall compete against a team from the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on Monday evening, and a team will fire a match with a ladies’ team on Tuesday evening. The cruiser’s concert party will give an entertainment in the Coronation Hall, St. Kilda, to-morrow evening, in aid of the relief fund. , , I The feature of the Dunedin’s' visit will be the children’s party to be held on board on Tuesday, and there is already I great activity on the cruiser in prepara- | tion for this event., A large number of children, mostly from the orphanages ■,and other homes, will be the guests of the Dunedin’s company throughout the day.
