RACING NEWS

By Sentinel.

dominations for events for the summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club close on Friday, October 13, at 5 p.m. The two-year-old winner Invoice cost 130 guineas as" a yearling. .*:'"' St. Simon line horses have sired a shade more than half the winners of the MLean Stakes. m It is reported that A. E. Eastwood has been retained to ride Silver Streak m the Stewards' Handicap. Polydora does not incur' a penalty tor > the New Zealand ; Cup if she wins at lii Timaru on Saturday. \ The Dunedin spring meeting had the 'bad luck to be terminated m bad weather. This was unfortunate for the club, but the general success must be regarded as encouraging. Three days' racing at Trentham. on October 18, 21, and 23 may make all the difference in the world to the possibilities at the New Zealand Cup. The Auckland winter meeting will be held on June 2,4, and 6. This, in reply to a correspondence, but the dates are too far ahead to be included in the calendar at the head of this column. Paper Money has sired four winners of the M'Lean Stakes. He has been a great sire of speed, and by contrast Martian, a great sire of stayers, has also sired five winners of the same race.. Wild Hind and Meprisant hold the race record for the Dunedin Guineas at lmin 41 3-ssec, and are the only winners that have broken lmin 42sec. Silver Scorn won last year in lmin 42sec. _ . There is a consensus of opinion ;that the two months' suspension on A. E. Ems has erred on the side of severity. He has, in fact, been heavily punished for being unable to control a badly-mouthed' two-year-old. . ; ' • , , , ' The penalty conditions attached to the New Zealand Cup should be wiped out. A horse should not be penalised for a long race as a result of winning over one decided at half the distance. The place system of betting seems destined to a fleeting popularity. Except at mieh meetings as Trentham, Ellerslie, and Riccarton punters find that they can use a lot of pedesterianism in pursuit ot profitless.punting. The stud record of Cowl, the dam oi The Masquerader, makes rather interesting reading, as it shows how a mare can produce either speed or stamina to different sires. She produced nothing but speed when bred for several seasons to Absurd. After being mated for four seasons with Absurd she produced Mask to Limond, and he shaped like a stayer. When bred to Thespian non-stayers came along again, and then to Limqnd Cowl produced The Masquerader, who shapes like a stayer.' The best she produced.to Absurd was Rational, whom Gloaming beat by next to nothing when putting up, the record for half a mile in 45sec. The three-year-old gelding Impasto, who won the Great Northern Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie last April, and raced unsuccessfully at Marton and Wanganui last month, has been turned out on the farm- of his part-owner, Mr A. J. M'Goyern, for, it is understood, a month. This means that he will not fulfil his Guineas engagement at Avondale and Ellerslie. ' Fashion Star, winner of the Breeders' Plate at Randwick, is by the Tredenms horse Treclare from Debonair, by I Linacre from Debotin, by Maltster from Lovelorn, by Grafton from Loveloch, by Lochiel from My Love, by Yattendon. Debotin was a half-sister to Violet H.. dam of In the Shade. Lovelorn was a sister to Bruntwood and Inglewood (Queensland Cup), two good Australian performers. My Love was a sister_to Lady Emma, who won the Dunedin Cup in 1882 and again in 1884. Treclare has sired winners in England, India, and Australia.' His best representatives to date in Australia have been Tregilla, (A.J.C. Derby) and Johnnie Jason (Victoria Derby and Sydney Cup).. Fashion Star was bred by Messrs A. E. Thompson and Sons at Bylong Station, Rylestone, New South Wales. As a yearling he was sold for 70 guineas, and his victory in the Breeders' Plate was worth £IOOO. He is trained at Moorfield by H. Mead for Mr J. Carroll. Lady Emma produced seven foals in Emmason, Dilemma, Hybrid, Lady Princess, Malemma, Emmelme. and Lord Rosslyn. Her line is extinct except through Emmeline, whose returns have never been fully supplied to the Stud Book- Adjudge, a good horse and sire ot My Lawyer, was a son of Invicta, a daughter of Emmeline. Wise Counsellor is a brother to My Lawyer, and they were . got by the Grafton horse Blackstonc. Grafton topped the list of winning sires in' Australia for several years, and is credited with siring more winners than any other horse. Grafton is a haltbrother to Polymelus, whose line has been particularly successful in England.
