THE FIKST ON ITS WAY.
BOSTON, September 25.
(Received Sept. 26, at 8 p.m.) The barquentine Bear of Oakland sailed on Monday for the Antarctic with scientific equipment valued at 100,000 dollars. Rear-admiral Byrd went down the harbour in the vessel, returning with the pilot. Dunedin, New Zealand, will be the Bear’s base, where she will be joined by the expedition’s other vessel, the Jacob Ruppert. The cargoes will be shifted at Dunedin before the vessels begin the voyage to the frozen land. Inside the Bay of Whales the Bear will land Rearadmiral Byrd and 40 men, who will remain there during the Antarctic winter.
