Rutherford, of Milton, left for Wellington by yesterday's express. The appointment of Mr Cyril Coventry as a member of the Licensing Committee for the Waitaki district has been gazetted. Messrs A. E. Russell (chairman) and C. R. Smith, of the Otago Electric Power Board, left yesterday for Wellington on business connected with the conversion of the board's loans, and also to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Power Boards' Association. A British Official Wireless message from Rugby states that Mr Robert Mitchell, Minister at Montevideo and Ambassador Designate at Santiago, has been appointed by the King a knight commander of St. Michael and St. George. A Press Association telegram from Palmerston North states that Squadronleader M'Gregor, pilot instructor to the Manawatu Aero Club, who was seriously injured in a crash at Milson last December, and was only recently discharged from hospital, made his second solo flight during the week-end, proving that he is still adept at' the controls of a plane. The following students were successful in obtaining passes in the home nursing examination held at the St. John Ambulance headquarters on September 14: — Misses A. Cuthbertson, F. Earland, H. Eckhold, A. Harraway, I. M. Hitchcock, F. MacConnachie, M. E. M'Donald, O. Brewster, E. Cox. Dr Marion Whyte and Sister Fulton conducted the examination. . At the annual meeting of the Otago Aero Club held last night opportunity was taken to make a presentation to Mr A. H. Allen, who was retiring from the position of president. On behalf of the flying members of the club Mr Don. Campbell presented Mr Allen with a model Moth plane set on an oak plinth suitably inscribed, and in doing so referred to the valuable service which Mr Allen had rendered in directing the activities of the club during his term of office. Mr H. L. Paterson, the newly-elected president, then made Mr Allen a further presentation on behalf of the committee of a solid leather travelling case and paid a tribute to the vision which he' had shown in his efforts tp create a spirit of " airmindedness" in the public of Otago. Mention was made of the fact that the suitcase was the work of disabled returned soldiers. Mr Allen acknowledged the gifts in the course of an appropriate reply. A large number of friends assembled In the Te Hapara Methodist Church a few nights ago to bid farewell to the Rev. R. Stuart Johnson (formerly, of Dunedin), who will leave shortly to take up his duties at the Sanson-Rongotea circuit, Manawatu. Evidence of Mr Johnson's "popularity with the young. people of the circuit was shown by the large and enthusiastic gathering of young folk, numbering about 70, and deep regret was expressed at his departure. The Rev. H. Daniel, superintendent minister, wished him God-speed and happiness in his new sphere of work, and Mr G. S. Vincent, senior circuit steward, also wished him every success. Mr Eric Smith present i Mr Johnson with a well-filled wallet as a small token of the love and esteem of his Gisborne friends. Mr Johnson thanked all present very sincerely for their kindness and good wishes and for the gift they had made to him, stating that he would never forget the many friends he had made during his short stay in Gisborne. -
