BOXING

PROFESSIONAL CONTEST. (Per United Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, September 25. The professional heavy-weight boxing contest this evening between Alan Campbell (12.5), of Timaru, and George Singleton (13.10), of Invercargill (formerly of Australia), was won by Singleton on points after a tame exhibition. The referee urged the pair several times to make a fight of it. The decision in favour of Singleton met with a hostile reception.

In the preliminary bout 9 J. Richmond (Otago) beat M. Paulin (Southland) and J. Reidy (Southland) beat W. Francis (Otago).

JOHNNY LECKIE v. PERCY HA WES. The Otago _ Boxing Association is fortunate in being able to present to the boxing public a bill of fare on Monday that leaves no room for doubt as to its attractiveness. Johnny is now in charge of his old mentor, Archie Leckie. and no one in New Zealand understands the champion like the trainer who had such a large part in the past in placing Johnny in tbe top flight. Tbe champion is hitting as hard as ever —his sparring partners bear out that contention —and his_ neat footwork is again a feature in his workouts. Johnny gave an exhibition at Balclutha recently, and those who saw him are convinced that his return to the ring in his home town will be a signal triumph. Percy Hawes is a notable claimant for the championship title. His recent win in Christchurch against Franklin has put him definitely in line for the title, and the champion will need to be at his best. Mr J. Kilmartin will referee the main bout and Mr R. Fulcher the amateur preliminaries, which will precede the professional contest. Particulars as to box plan arrangements and tariff are advertised elsewhere in this issue.
