TRAGEDY IN GRAVEL PIT (Pee United Press Association.) , WHAKATANB, September 25. A relief worker, E. Jarrett, was killed this morning in the Poroporp gravel pit. He was running beside a loaded lorry when he slipped and fell, the lorry wheel crushing his head. Death was instantaneous. He leaves a wife and 10 children. __• CHILD DROWNED IN STREAM (Per United Press Association.) WHAKATANE, September 25. The 15 months' old eon of Mr and Mrs Charlie Lane, of Onepu, near le Teko, while playing by the stream leading from the electric power house about 10 o'clock on Sunday morning, fell into the stream and was drowned. BOTH LEGS FRACTURED (Per United Press Association.) GORE, September 25. James Ryan, aged 58 years, a single man, a farm hand, of Riversdale, suffered a fracture of both legs on Saturday mgnt when he was run over by a motor car. He was admitted to the Gore Hospital in a serious condition. STRUCK BY CABLE CAR INQUEST ON VICTIM. An inquest touching the death of Herbert Cleveland, who died in Hospital on Saturday evening as the result of injuries received when he waa struck by the Mornington cable car, was opened yesterday morning before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M. ' . Evidence of identification was given by George Conetantine Dodd, a brother-in-law of the deceased. Witness said he last saw the deceased alive on beptember 21, when he appeared to be in good health. He was a returned soldier and at times suffered from indifferent health. . . ~ The inquest was adjourned sine die.

A GANGER'S DEATH SUDDEN COLLAPSE AT WORK. A married man named Nihb Peter Verngreen, a£ed 67, dropped dead at his work at Mofnington yesterday morning. The deceased was a ganger, and was m charge of a group of relief workers at the time of the "fatality. The body was removed to the Morgue, where an inquest was opened before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M. After evidence of identification had been given, the inquest was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
