THE FRENCH FRONTIER

ELABORATE DEFENCES FOUR YEARS IN BUILDING. LONDON, September 1. The Prime Minister of France, M. Daladier, made an aerial inspection of the famous Maginot line of defences ou the eastern frontier (says the Paris correspondent of the Daily Mail), and expressed satisfaction with them. The line consists of a network of tunnels and underground railways, connecting with gasproof and gunproof forts, which are furnished with steel cupolas and electrical apparatus for raising guns and hoisting ammunition. The Paris correspondent of the Manchester Guardian explains that this zone covers the " hole " between Metz and Sarreguimines, known as the "invaders' highway." M. Daladier says he is fully satisfied with the results achieved after four years of superhuman efforts fully to protect France from surprise attacks.
