THE BYRD EXPEDITION

. FINAL PREPARATIONS SUPPLY SHIP READY TO LEAVE. BOSTON, September 25. (Received Sept. 26, at 0.30 a.m.) Rear-admiral Byrd's supply ship Bear of Oakland underwent her final preparations to-day, preparatory to starting for the south polar regions to-morrow. Foodstuffs and scientific instruments were placed on board and clearance papers were issued. The expedition flagship Pacific Fir has been renamed Jacob Ruppert, in honour of the New York baseball magnate and brewer, who is one of the expedition's principal sponsors.

Eear-admiral Byrd will leave on the Ruppert in about a week and expects to overtake the Bear long before she reachs the base at Dunedin, which is expected to require about two months. According to despatches from Washington the Post Office Department announced that a post office will be established in Antarctica and called "Little America." This is one of the first official acts in recognising the territory explored by Rear-admiral Byrd as a United States possession.
