.*«» COMMITTEE OF. MANAGEMENT The weekly meeting of the Committee of Management of the Otago Rugby Union was held last night. The president, Mr John Mitchell, occupied the chair. Lieutenant Cartwright, sports officer or H.M.A.S., Australia, wrote thanking the union for its kindness and hospitality to the personnel of the warship during their stay at Dunedin. The letter stated:— " The facilities you gave us to watch your big matches, the trouble you took to arrange a very pleasant game for us, and your generous hospitality afterwards were very much appreciated by everyone. One and all are agreed that they never enjoyed a better day's sport and such goodfellowship and thoughtful hospitahty as they did at Carisbrook. We would like you to know how thoroughly it was ap ( - preciated and how very grateful we feel. The Zingari-Richmond Club was granted permission to send a team to play Matakanui, at Omakau, on September 30. Mr H. G. Munro will be the manager. The Port Chalmers Club was granted permission to send a team to play at JUitangata on September 30. Mr H. Glengarry will be the manager. Robert Gilkison wrote etatmg that the committee of the Law y. Police match desired to thank the union for the. use of Carisbrook Ground, as well as jerseys, etc The gathering had been a great success, and would provide about £IBO ior the relief of distressed people. Mr A. Haynes, on behalf of the Flag Committee, recommended that the Fourth Grade Competition be dosed, and that the Zingari-Richmond team be declared the winners.—The recommendation was apPr Mr P. The whole of the functions had been splendidly organised and were an unqualified success, inere was no question but that the celebrations would have the effect of giving the game a tremendous fillip in Auckland. Mr D C. Jolly reported on the playing of the seven-a-side tournament at Carisbrook and Bathgate Park on Saturday. He said he wished to thank the members of the sub-committee for their work, but he regretted that the attendance had not been larger. He thought the committee might consider the question of playing the tournament earlier next year.—Members generally agreed that it would be wiser to hold the tournament earlier, with a consequent increase in the "gate" (which goes to the clubs).—The opinion was also expressed that the club games in Dunedin could be commenced earlier than in the past. It was pointed out that in other. centres club matches were commenced earlier than in Dunedin.—lt was decided to defer further consideration of the matter. Mr T. Porter brought up the question of the union dividing the Senior Competition next year into an A and B section. — Mr D. M. Stuart said he thought that the Junior Grade should be divided into an A and B section. —After some discussion a sub-committee consisting of the chairman arid Messrs Harris, Stuart, C. Sonntag, and Porter, was appointed to go into the question of instituting a Senior A and B Competition and to report to the committee. AUSTRALIAN NAVY v. POLICE. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, September 25. Playing typical Australian Rugby a team from the Australian naval vessels now in port played a drawn game.with a team representing the. Wellington Police Force at Athletic Park this afternoon, each side scoring six points.
