CITY POLICE COURT

Monday, September 25. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. On a charge of drunkenness a first offender was fined 20s, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. On a similar charge Charles John Henke was fined 20s, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. INTOXICATED MOTORIST. William Blissard was charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a. motor car.—The defendant pleaded guilty.—Sub-inspector Cameron said the defendant was fairly well intoxicated, although he was not drunk. He had been driving south along Crawford street and hit a telegraph post.—The defendant was fined £lO, his license was cancelled, and he was prohibited from driving for 18 months. REMAND GRANTED. Robert Stanley M'Causland was charged with making counterfeit coin.— Chief Detective Young asked for a remand for one week and this was granted, an application for bail being refused. CHARGES OP THEFT. Eric Bain was charged with the theft of one bag of fruit valued at 6d, the property of William Dallas; one pair of pyjamas and one swab, of a total value of Bs, the property of some person unknown. Sub-inspector Cameron said that, as the result of complaints which had been received by the police concerning the theft of fruit from a motor car, watch was kept by a constable on Saturday night over the complainant's car. The accused, who had had some liquor, was seen to pass the car, turn back,, and open the door of the car. He took out a parcel of fruit, and when the constable went after him took to his heels. He was caught and taken into custody, when the other property mentioned in the charge was found in his possession. On Sunday the accused admitted to witness that he • had taken this property from another car. The accused was a relief worker and was in delicate health. It was an ordinary case of sneak thieving. —The accused said he was muddled witJi drink at the time.—The accused.was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment on the second charge and convicted and discharged on the ftyst. On a charge of, the theft of a purse : a string of beads and the sum of £4, a young woman, publication of whose i.amc was suppressed, appeared for sentence.— The accused was admitted to probatiou for 12 months. John Richard Kerr and Ada Kerr, who were jointly charged with theft and convicted on September 18, appeared for sentence. After considering the respective probation officers' reports the magistrate admitted Kerr to probation for a period of 18 months on the condition that he paid witnesses' expenses (16s) in the manner directed by the probation officer. Mrs Kerr was admitted to probation for a period of nine months. MAINTENANCE. Elizabeth Jane Stewart applied for a variation of a maintenance order in respect of her son.—After hearing evidence in regard to the applicant's circumstances the magistrate remitted the arrears, but refused to alter the order. Ronald James Rackley was charged with default of a maintenance order, the arrears in respect to which amounted to £4O 4s 6d.—After hearing evidence in regard to defendant's circumstances, the magistrate adjourned the.matter for a fortnight, a condition being that the accused reported weekly to the maintenance officer. .'■',■•.

The adjourned case in which John Richard Kerr was proceeded against by his wife, who sought separation, maintenance and guardianship orders, was continued. —After hearing lengthy evidence the magistrate reserved his decision an 1 adjourned the case for a fortnight.
