FIRE BOARD The quarterly meeting of the Port Chalmers Fire Board was held last evening in the Municipal Buildings. There were present —Messrs F. C. Smith (chairman), A Campbell, H. A. B. Brabant, G. F. Mirams, and E. H. Ferguson. The secretary was also in attendance. The brigade was inspected by members of the board, who found everything to be satisfactory. The superintendent pointed out that a lock was required for one of the fire station doors and that the front windows of the building required attention. The board, after expressing its appreciation of the smart turn-out made by the brigade, derided that the requests made by the supeiintendent be granted. The secretary of the brigade, in his quarterly report, stated that the motor was in good condition and the equipment in fair working order. The meetings and practices of the brigade had been well attended, and keenness was being shown by the members. During the past three months one fire had occurred outside the district. The election of officers of the brigade had resulted in all "being appointed to their respective former positions. At a social held on September 22, service honours had been presented to Superintendent C. Macdonald and other members of the brigade. A book on fire prevention had come to hand, and was proving very beneficial to the members. The brigade again appealed to the board for financial assistance as its funds were depleted.—The report was adopted, and it was decided to make a grant of £3 3s to the brigade. Accounts amounting to £3l 4s lOd were passed for payment. A circular letter was received from the New Zealand Fire Brigades' Institute in connection with the use of lire hydrants. It was stated that the " pillar " hydrant, now installed in many of the large cities, particularly in America, was undoubtedly the most efficient type. The Technical and Research Committee of the Institute desired to bring before local governing bodies the serious ineffectiveness of the ball hydrant for lire brigade purposes in comparison with other patterns of fire hydrants in use in countries other than New Zealand.—The circular was received.

PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE The monthly meeting of the Port Chalmers Progressive League was held in the Council Chambers last evening. The Rev. W. Roberts was in the chair and there was a large attendance of members. Correspondence was received from the Borough Council stating that the destruction to the borough reserves was being fully investigated. It was reported that the Borough Council had appointed a committee to attend to the recreation ground, and to notify the different sports bodies when the ground was suitable for play. A notice board was to be erected notifying all those in the habit of using the ground on Sundays that no play would be allowed between the hours of 10.30 a.m. and 1 p.m. A general discussion in connection with using the gully above the Queen s Gardens as a tip resulted in the league agreeing to the site so long as it was kept tidy and all disagreeable matter being kept covered.
