ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

A TRAGEDY AT MORNINGTON MAN STRUCK BY CABLE CAR. ' Suffering from injuries caused- through his being struck by a Mornington cable car, Herbert Cleveland, a.married man, aged 39 years, who resided at 17 Peel street, Mornington, was admitted to Hospital at 7.15 on Saturday evening, and died about half an hour later. The accident occurred just after the 8.50 car from town had passed the Macnee street stop, and although, on account of the poor visibility at the time, the grip man was keeping a sharp lookout, he saw nothing of Cleveland until he felt a bump, and, on stopping the car to investigate, found the deceased lying in an unconscious condition across the rails, just in front of the buffer. The gravely injured man was immediately removed to the Hospital, where he was found to be suffering from severe injuries to the head. Although treatment was at once applied, he died without regaining consciousness. An inquest will be opened at the Hospital this morning, when evidence of identification will be taken. FOOTBALLER INJURED Allen Parker, a single man, aged 24 years, who resides at 201 King Edward street, South Dunedin, was admitted to Hospital at 7.50 p.m. on Saturday, suffering from a dislocation of the right shoulder, received whilst playing football at Tahuna Park. INJURIES TO HEAD Joseph Johnson, aged 28 years, employed in the railway locomotive department, received injuries to his head and concussion through being struck by a heavy piece of coal which fell from the tender of an engine in the railway yards on Saturday morning. The injured man, who resides at No. 9 Market street, was admitted to the Hospital for treatment. FOOTBALLER COLLAPSES (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 24. Alan Bowes, the Canterbury representative Rugby player, collapsed at a dinner given after the match with the South Canterbury team for the Ranfurly Shield on Saturday, and was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital. It is thought that Bowes was injured in a tackle, but his injuries will not be known until an X-ray examination has heen made to-morrow. His condition is not serious.
