Although the strength of the side was heavily reduced by the loss of seven of the best players, five of them being in the South Island team, Canterbury was able to-day to withstand the challenge of South Canterbury for the Ranfurly Shield. The match was played in brilliant sunshine on a ground too hard for foptball. There were many stoppages for injuries to players. The standard of play was poor, put the game was so even that interest was kept alive until the final whistle. All the scoring was done in the first spell, Canterbury winning by 6 points (a try and a penalty goal) to 3 points (a try). The attendance was less than 10,000. At the end of a good back movement, M'Phail, when penned on the touch line, centre-kicked, and Mortlock came up and touched down, French failed to convert. Canterbury tried hard to add to the score, but the back combination was never quite good enough. Just at half time Seaton (South Canterbury) was caught offside, and French kicked a penalty goal. The South Canterbury forwards showed up better in the second half and once or twice the Canterbury line was in danger. The home backs badly needed Oliver to straighten up the attacking movements, of which there were many which proved ineffective.
