High Street in 1862: Beginning at the right-hand corner (opening on to Princes Street) Richardson and Reynolds conducted a surveyors', house and estate agents', business; next door was Fraser and Granger, saddlers; then Otago Sale Rooms, occupied by a firm of auctioneers; and Empire Hotel.(James Osgood). The signs along the street then show the following: Wholesale and Retail, The Otago Company; Otago Refreshment Rooms (which were conducted by William Lang, whose name was painted on the lamp), Bowling Saloon (on the sign near the lamp). Concert Room (sign on corner of building) and Commercial Hotel (shown on second lamp), which was kept by Shadrach E. R. Jones, a public-spirited member of the community, and later by W. E. Vahland. In 1864 the Old Identity Hotel was conducted by John Crawford 'i in the building below the City Bowling Saloon. ' /

The Same Street in 1933 s The main building on the right is the Grand Hotel, part of the street frontages being devoted to shops. Its erection occupied some considerable time and to make room for it several businesses had - to be closed and the premises demolished.. The directory for 1880-1881 gives the following names and businesses from the corner of High street to the Arcade:—J. R. Baxter, gold chaser; John Skene, labour exchange; Robert D. Price, hairdresser; Thomas H. Dodson, Empire Hotel; S. G. Smith and Co., butchers; Victoria Insurance Company; James and John Watson, Watson's Hotel; Butterworth Bros., warehousemen; Bank of Australasia; Arcade. The corner shop on the left-hand side of the street has been occupied for 42 years by a tobacconist's business, started by Mr Samuel Jacobs and (continued by his son, Mr V. S. Jacobs.
