♦ — '—— OTAGO FIFTY-MILE CHAMPIONSHIP C. G. LUCAS RETAINS TITLE. < The Otago 50-Mile Amateur Cycling Championship was held on Saturday afternoon, fastest time being.put up by C. G. Lucas, of the Pacific Cycling Club, who thus won the championship for the second year in succession. The runner-up was D. M'Callum, also of Pacific, whose time of 2hr llmin 51sec was only onefifth of a second slower than the winner's, while third place in the championship was filled by G. Foster,:another Pacific rider, whose time was only a further one-fifth of; a second slower. These riders were ailoff the scratch mark, and rpde a great race, wheels separating themat the, finishing line. First home out of the field 0f~35 startfs was M. W«ght, off the. 22mihute mark, who was closely followed by 8.. Oakes. (4miri),; but both these riders, who Had; .unfortunately, taken a wrong . turn about three miles from Outram, were disqualified by the referee (Mr R. A. Malone), and first place, went toA. Targuse, of Invercargill, off the 16minute mark. H. Insall, also of Invercargill, secured second place from' 12 minutes, .and..C.,M!Gregor,...of Otago, from the 20-minute handicap, took third place. The teams' race. for the Teacher's Cup was w6n= by Invercargill with a total of 15 points, Otago being second with 35 points and Pacific' third with 51 points. The course extended from Burnside along the Main South road to Henley, thence to Berwick, Maungatua, Woodside, and Ouiram, after which the riders branched off to Wairongoa, then through Mosgiel ot East Taieri, finishing at Green Island. The conditions for the race were good, .the. riders missing the rain until they reached Outram.- The roads were in good order. The contest attracted representatives from the Invercargill, Otago, Pacific, and Milton Amateur Cycling Clubs'. The limit men were sent away at 2.25 p.m.; v the -scratch, men leaving 22 minutes later. At Otokia M. Paterson (Otago) and S. Seque (Otago) ■were-dropped by C. Ralston' (Pacific) and W.-.J. Templeton (Pacific), who were going well. At Henley B. Oakes, M. Wright, and A. Fletcher (Otago) were out in front, with J. Wilson and C. M'Gregor about one minute behind, followed by G. Ralston two minutes later. Then came J. Hamilton, J. Jackson, and W. Pickford, all of Invercargill. .At Berwick A. Blackie had a puncture, but-quickly made repairs and continued the race. Racing through Out-ram,-Oakes, A. -M.-.Wright,-W. Templeton, Ralston, and Targuse were out in front, and going well. Then came J. Hamilton leading a large bunch, followed by M'Connell, E. Fletcher, S. Seque, D. Patton; Mv Paterson, C Gilchrist, J. Kewish, and J. Flyim, The scratch men were going great guns, and were only seven minutes behind the leaders at this stage. At the Taieri aerodrome the three leaders were being followed closely by Templeton, Targuse, and M'Gregor, and at the Mosgiel railway crossing Templetdh had been dropped. Wright finished ahead of Oakes, but both were disqualified for having taken the wrong route at the back of Outram.
