Nightcap jumped badly at Geraldine, and flattened three hurdles. •
Tea Garden stopped badly in his race on the second day at Geraldine. Irish . Lancer struck himself while at Geraldine, and hence his absence on the second day of the meeting;. Ranelagh" and Hurlingham have captured eight races at the last two meetings held at Geraldine. .Spoon:has a."leg" which may shorten her turt® career, although apparently sound enough when racing last week. Cleaner "had' everything in her favour wheii she led into the straight in the Wainui, Hack Handicap, but "failed to resist a -strong challenge from Davolo. Rational II had a big pull in the weights in the Second Hurdles at Geraldine; and won nicely after being well handled by J. Veeres, who has bepn schooling the Rossendale gelding.' Royal- Amphora made a one-horse race of the Gladstone Handicap. He has # a good turn of speed, and will win again. Royal Amphora was got by Tea Tray from Weeplete, by Winkie—Replete, by Soult. ' Chrysology was ridden ..in behind the leaders in the President's ;Handicap '. in the;!hope that' it might help hini to stay better. He, however, seems to race better when allowed to; run along, as he did not finish as well as on, the first day.
Davolo. who carried strong support in the Wainui Hack Handicap,-won in good-style. He was well back until reaching the straight, and he then put in a run which smothered the opposition. He was. got by Pombal from Impendence, by Royal Lancer—Ethel 11, by Picton. Nightly's win at Geraldine brings him in line to be considered one of the best of his age. The Night Raid gelding is on the improve, and by the New Zealand Cup meeting will be ready to take (his chance in the classics.
: There was a lot of support, for Doiran in the final event at Geraldine. He was one of the leaders all the way, and looked dangerous as he led into the straight. The final furlong found him out, and St. Joan cut him out of second place. Doiran appeared to win' too soon,'and this left him without a finish. •
To date 107 people, have had their names proposed as new members for the Canterbury Joclcev Club. The election v of new members will take place on October 3. It will be recalled that at a special meeting of members of the. C.J.C. held on July 26. the annual .subscription was reduced from £5 5 to £3 3. ; There is said to be a particularly fine half-brother, by Lord Warden, to Blixen at Mr G. A. Ka'in!s stud.; Receipt should nick w : ell with Lord Warden, as she will return to him St. Simon blood through Paper Money and Birkenhead, and Musket through Dreadnought. Pink Coat was got by a Hurry On horse from an,All Red mare, who -returned .St. Simon and Musket to the .sire.
The first grey sired by Heroic was on view-in the birdcage at. the recent Melbourne meeting. He is. a two-year-old from Fairy Elf. and he has been named Spartan. The colt cost 200 guineas as a yearling, and would be worth a -lot more than that now (says a Melbourne.writer). Speed is written- all. over Spartan. A bit ."on the leg/' he resembles in make and shape of .the sire of his dam, Ohrysolaus, from whom he. gets his colour. The colt is exceedingly well shaped, and has good breadth across the back. With his breeding—Chrysolaus was one of the fastest horses imported to Australia from England, and Heroic, is noted for the epeed he .transmits to'his stock—it is^. little wonder that Spartan has every indication "of possessing pace. .. .'.■»"'.,
