BANK DEPOSITS

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —" Truth's " answer is hardly plain enough. Like most men, I have not in my life read a book specifically dealing with banking, orthodox or otherwise. 1 have not had the inclination, even if 1 had the time. Almost entirely, newspapers have supplied my reading matter on the subject, as they do to most people. So, if there is going to be a new evangel preached about banking, the message needs to be so plain that it can make its appeal in the newspapers. To revert to the question,' What, on Douglas principles, is the use to banks of deposits, on a large. proportion of which, moreover, interest has to be paid? Go into any bank in Dunedin and you will see a large staff employed keeping track of these deposits. Is it really all makebelieve, conjuring, if not extracting, sunbeams from cucumbers? If it is so, could not the banks find a way less expensive to themselves of deluding the public?—l am, etc., Without Prejudice. September 23.
