OBITUARY

CAPTAIN JAMES GREEN Captain James Green, who died at Wellington on September 18, was born at Manning River, New South Wales, on October 13, 1884, and at an early age went to sea in sailing ships. After serving his time he obtained his second mate’s certificate at Sydney in November, 1900. He joined the Union Steam Ship Company’s employ on January 17, 1910, as fourth officer of the R.M.S. Makura, and later transferred to the Warrimoo in a similar capacity. He was promoted third officer of the Moura in April, 1910, serving in a similar capacity in the Koromiko before being appointed second officer of the Squall in November, 1911, afterwards transferring to the Kauri, Koromiko, and Karitane. In May, 1915, he was appointed acting chief officer of the Tofua and was later confirmed in that rank and transferred to the Karori; he also served in that capacity in the Wanaka, Tarawera, Pateena, Mararoa (for more than three years), Waitomo, Moeraki, and Maori. Captain Green was appointed master on March 2, 1923, his first command being the Rakanoa, and he subsequently held command of the following Union Steam Ship Company vessels; —Corinna, Kaimanawa, Koromiko, Kaitangata, Ngahere (wrecked Grey bar, May 12, 1924), Kamona, Kaiapoi, Kaikorai, Waipahi, Kaponga, Wingatui, Karori, Kanna, and Opihi. He resigned from the service on October 5, 1927.
