CHILDREN AND RAFFLES

, TO THE EDITOR. Sir— ln this morning’s paper I notice that the Women’s Christian Temperance Union has written to the Education Board asking that steps be taken to prohibit school children from beinfc used as agents to promote raffles. Like Mr Wallace, 1 am old fashioned enough to believe that this practice is harmful to children. It is poor education indeed for children to be growing up with the idea of always getting something for nothing. I would like to inform the Education Board that as recently as yesterday, little girls were going round the shops in Caversham raffling a tea cosy. I think .Caversham residents have been long suffering and the shopkeepers exceedingly patient, but I am quite sure we will all be glad when “ the Queen ” is crowned, for the children’s sake as well as our own.—l am, etc., Child Welfare.
