PLEA OF A TAXPAYER
GOSPEL QUOTED IN VAIN. An impecunious taxpayer in France has made an original but unavailing appeal to the collector for the district in which he lives. In response to a final demand for payment he wrote: “Will you be good enough to read the Gospel according to. St. Matthew, chapter xviii, verse 20, and base your reply on the following verse? ” The tax-collector had the curiosity to read the verses indicated. One runs: “ Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.” The other is: “Then the Lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.”
The man who is unable or unwilling to pay what he owes to the State, has received the following reply;—“l regret to inform you that the present laws concerning the abatement of taxes do not envisage the application of taxpayers of the verses to which you refer. I must, therefore, beg you to call at my office without delay, otherwise legal action will have to be taken.”
