X 1 196 Castle street.. .. j 23s A brief but violent tempest fell upon Isola Bella, the world-famous island in Lake Maggiore, between Baveno and Stresa, just before midnight on July 16. Although it lasted no more than a minute, its effects on the beautiful Borroraean gardens were disastrous. Numbers of 200-ycar-old rare trees were uprooted and in their fall crushed plants, walls, and balconies. The Prince of Angera, whose ancestor, Count Vitaliano Borromeo, laid out the gardens in the seventeenth century, has ordered that they are to be restored without loss of time, but the work will not be short or easy, as some specimens of rare plants will have to be imported from distant countries.
