The Astronomical Observatory of Petping, China, the driest in the world, inis recently ceased to function, having been turned into a museum of historic bronze instruments. Established in 1280 by the Tartar kings, the observatory has been forecasting eclipses and making astronomical observations for 653 years. Compared with this record similar institutions in Europe are young, seeing that the oldest at Leyden was established in 1632, that at Paris in 1671, and Greenwich in 1075. Mohammedan astronomers originally staffed Peiping Observatory, but in 1622 a Jesuit missionary proved to the emperor that they had made a mistake in calculating the arrival of an eclipse, with the results that the Jesuits remained in charge o? the observatory until the middle of the nineteenth century. The instruments used from the beginning down to the present time have been preserved, and now are one of the chief tourist attractions of Peiping.
