"The. Dog. Owner's Guide.” Written and .Illustrated by Eric Pitch Daglish. London: Dent. (Us net.) "The Dog: Its Ailments and Diseases.”; By B. A. M'Mlchan, R.V.S. Illustrated. Sydney: Angus and Robertson. (4s 6d net.) " Disobedient Dogs and- Other Matters.” By Lt-Col. G. H. Badcock. Foreword by Lady Kitty Rltson. Illustrated. London; Jenkins. (5s net.) ■ Mr Daglisb’s numerous illustrations from wood engravings in his “ The - Dog Owner’s Guide " are not as pleasing, artistically, as some of his wild Nature studies, but they appear to present accurately the characteristics of the different breeds, some- 70 in all, represented in the book. The text is comprehensive.- Mr Daglish cbmmences with some advice to those who have, or are thinking of procuring, a dog as a household companion, watch-dog, or sporting assistant, and indicates the suitability of various breeds. Follows a brief section in which the points to be looked for, in each breed, the manners; and temper of the ■ breed, are outlined., Subsequent chapters are devoted to instruction in feeding, washing, and housing dogs, to breeding, training, and the ■ treatment of. canine-ailments, and - to exhibiting dogs. The hook, which is well produced, may be described as a complete manual for the average owner of dogs. Mr M'Michan is a distinguished Australian veterinary surgeon, and his.“ The Dog: Its Ailments and. Diseases ” may be accepted as up to date and reliable. He commences with a, chapter on the general' cate and feeding of dogs, then goes on to describe in detail the symptoms indicative of disease, with a view to enabling the owner to diagnose with some accuracy, and gives advice bn treatment and nursing. Chapters are included on poisons and their antidotes and the use of- X-Tay and ultra-violet ray in veterinary practice. Two sections are contributed by Dr Stewart MTCay on tick paralysis and hydatid disease. The .hook is illustrated with diagrams and photographs of prize-winning dogs. _ . Colonel Badcock is a well-known English breeder, his interest being primarily, but hot exclusively,, with sporting dogs. He gives valuable advice on the patient methods by which dogs may be trained to obey their master, while retaining affection arid respect for him. There are chapters on kennel management, canine maladies, and show's. The illustrations are numerous. M'G.
