NO REDUCTION IN TAXATION THE POSITION IMPROVING STATEMENT BY MINISTER (Fbom Oub Paeliamentaby Repostm.) WELLINGTON, September 21. “We were hoping it might be pos* sible to reduce the taxation levied for unemployment purposes, but there does not appear to be any immediate prospect of our being able to do that now,” said the Minister of Employment (Mr A. Hamilton) in an interview to-day. Mr Hamilton said that he proposed to make a statement to the House shortly on unemployment finance. The board was still living within its income, and the Minister believed that the general economic situation was showing signs of permanent' improvement. While number of registered unemployed was still high, the figures included men engaged on the No. 10 (building subsidy) scheme. An analysis of the work being done by the registered unemployed was being prepared, and he believed the return would reveal a more hopeful position than had obtained for some time. Had it not been for the building subsidy scheme it might have been possible to reduce the unemployment taxation slightly, but he thought it would be agreed that that scheme would prove of great value in providing productive employment.
