LOS ANGELES TOURNAMENT PERRY DEFEATS VAN RYN. LOS ANGELES, September 20. Perry defeated Van Ryn, 6 —l, 6 —3; Stoefen eliminated Nunoi, o—4, 6—4. In an exhibition game Billy Seward (Beverly Hills) defeated M'Grath, 6—3, 7—5. Seward defeated M'Grath in an exhibition match in straight sets in a battle of backhands. M'Grath won the service in the first game, taking ’the winning point with a backhand ace. Seward took his first service to love, starting a winning streak that' lasted the next four games, during which M'Grath won only 6 points. In the seventh game M'Grath won the service after a deuce struggle, then broke Seward’s service. There were many brilliant rallies in the next game, but after M'Grath took the score to deuce he netted twice to lose the service and the set, 6—3. The second set went to 12 games, and was hard fought" throughout; but in the twelfth game Seward broke M'Grath’s service to win the match, 7—5. EXHIBITION MATCH. LOS ANGELES, September 20. In the exhibition lawn tennis match Perry and Nunoi defeated Crawford and Turnbull, 4—6, o—3, 6—4. Jack Tidball, the United States intercollegiate champion, defeated Vines, I—6, 6—4, 7—5.
