August Carbajal, a convict in Mexico City, was a man whose pardon came just too late. He was sent to prison there, six years ago, after a trial on a murder charge, and on every national holiday since then he has applied for a pardon. Each time his request was refused, but, not discouraged, he applied again this year on the second most important holiday in the Mexican year. A few weeks after Carbajal’s application had been sent, the warden one morning announced to the prisoner that because of presidential clemency he was to be set free. Carbajal literally jumped for joy, but the look of delight left hi* face and he sat down. When the warden went to him he found he was dead.
