Clear-cut plans for a colossal clearance of London’s slums have been laid before the London County Council by its Housing Committee. It is proposed to spend £35,000,000 on the -work over a period of 10 years, so putting a quarter of a million people into clean, healthy homes. Most of the areas affected are in the eastern boroughs of Stepney, Bethnal Green and Shoreditch, but a considerable part of South London, where the difficulties of obtaining site for rehousing are not so great, will be dealt with. Sir E. Hilton Young, Minister of Health, said: “The Government has sounded the trumpet for a general attack upon the slum evil. I have asked all the cities and urban districts to send to me before the cud of September a five-years’ programme for slum clearance. It can be done. The Government is going to put it through.”
