THE KUROW DISTRICT

(From Oub Own Correspondent.) KUROW, September 20., LAWN TENNIS. The fifth annual meeting of the Waitaki Hydro Staff Lawn Tennis Club was held in the hostel, Mr N. R. Carter occupying the chair and 18 members being present. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr J. H. Christie; secretary, Mr G. Powell; club captain, Mr F. B. Ohlson; committee, Messrs L. S. Payne and J. W. Walker. The opening day was fixed for October 17. A successful conceit was held in the Y.M.C.A. Hall, Waitaki Hydro, on Tuesday evening for the purpose of raising funds to provide books for the infant department, and also to assist the Bible class funds. The programme, which was much appreciated by the large audience, was a s follows:—" Spring Song,” the infants; " Uncle Mose Counts the Eggs, Miss E. Nash and Mr R. L. Gillespie; Highland fling, Miss L. Chapman; song, “John Brown’s Baby,” infants; recitation, “The Pilgrim of the Night,” Mr George Patterson; sketch, “Bananas,” Messrs H. F. Berry and F. Mulligan, jun.; sketch, “Ah,” F. Mulligan, jun., and H. F. Berry and Miss M. B.' Hepburn; duet, Misses M. and L. Chapman; one-act play, “A Startling Revelation’’—Miss E. Nash, Messrs H. M. Tomlinson, S. Hallett, R. L. Gillespie, and N. Grocott; song, “ Love’s Old Sweet Song,” Miss Claire Mulligan and chorus; “ Chin, Chin, Chinaman, small boys; recitation, “Miss N. Knockabout,” Master D. Burns; sketch, “View Matrimony”—Misses C. Mulligan, M. E., Murphy, M. E. Hepburn, and Messrs F. Mulligan, jun., and H. F. Berry; sketch, “Tall Tales,” Messrs R. L. Gillespie and H. M. Tomlinson; sketch, "The News Editor”—Miss E. Nash, Messrs H. M. Tomlinson, R. L. Gillespie, and N. Grocott; pianoforte duet, Misses Murphy; sketch. “Blisters,” Messrs H. F. Berry and F. Mulligan, jun. TUG-OF-WAR. The following pulls will be held on Thursday, the first night of the Waitaki Hydro combined sports carnival and tug-of-war: —Kurow v. Hydro (Boys’ Heavy), at 8 p.m.; Haka v. Kurow (Senior), at 8.30 p.m.; Y.M.C.A. A v. Y.M.C.A. B (Boys’ Heavy), at 9 p.m.; Y.M.C.A. v. Hydro (Bantams), at 9.30 p.m.; Argonauts v. Frothblowers (Senior), at 10 p.m. MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB. The following are the best scores at the weekly shoot of the Kurow Miniature Rifle Club: — Rifle. Hep. TI.

T. Lamberton won the weekly button off the rifle and S. Appleby the handicap button in the final shoot off. In the weekly team shoot last week the club retained the lead. The team was as follows: —A. C. Robinson, F. Welsh, W. Booth, J. Curie. It is interesting to note that E. Christiansen’s team, winners of two weeks ago, tied. As the rules do not allow a shoot off, the holders retain the lead. The teams are looking forward to their visit to Oamaru on Thursday and Duntroon next Tuesday. The committee has decided to hold a dance to mark the end of the season on a date to be fixed.
